Taking a taxi in Aruba, step by step
There is no Uber or Lyft on the island, so a licensed taxi is the standard ride.
Find a licensed taxi
A taxi in Aruba is a vehicle with a TX license plate. At the airport, the official taxi stand is near the arrivals exit.
Know the fare first
Fares are set by the government by zone, so the price to your hotel is the same whichever taxi you take. Every licensed taxi displays a QR code that links to taxi.aw.
Ride and pay
Pay in US dollars or Aruban florins at US$1 = Afl. 1.80. The official conditions do not list card payment, so ask the driver before you set off.
Report a problem
A driver may not charge more than the approved fare. Report an overcharge to the Department of Public Transportation (DTP) through taxi.aw, on +297 594 8660 or +297 564 4050, or at complaints@dtp.gov.aw.

THE RULES
What can change the fare
One to four passengers
The listed fare covers up to four. Each extra passenger adds $3, and a taxi may not carry more than seven.
$10 minimum fare
Even for a very short hop.
$5 surcharge, once per trip
On Sundays, official holidays, every day from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM, and from December 24 through January 1.
Luggage
Each passenger to or from the airport, or between hotels, may bring one piece of luggage and one backpack or handbag. Each additional piece is $3.
Tipping
Tipping is not required and is not part of the government fare. Any tip is at your own discretion.

When a taxi is enough, and when to book a private ride
A taxi suits you when
You travel alone or as a couple, make a short hop such as hotel to restaurant, or have not planned ahead. The fare is published, so you know the price before you get in.
A private transfer suits you when
You are five or more people, carry a lot of luggage, land late at night, travel with children who need car seats, or want a driver who tracked your flight and waits with a name sign. One fixed, all-in price, agreed before you fly.
